Chinua Achebe Writers Talk held at Glasgow University (Part 2)

Chinua Achebe is a Nigerian novelist whose book, Things Fall Apart (1958) is a modern classic of African fiction one of the most widely read books in contemporary African literature. 1975 was the year in which his lecture An Image of Africa: Racism in Conrad’s “Heart of Darkness” roused controversy for characterising Joseph Conrad as “a bloody racist.”

Additional Information

The same event as is documented on Tape 137. Achebe continues to take questions from the floor, with the conversation touching on subjects such as the role of tradition in society, the arts and education in Nigeria, religion, language and the role of English in African dialects as well as optimism in Nigeria relating to oil and other natural resources. There is a discussion of art and politics, with Achebe saying that if someone is defending art for art’s sake, look into their background and you will probably find that they are doing quite well out of the system. Tom McGrath rounds things up at the end and thanks Achebe. The audio quality is, like Tape 137, poor throughout. The film ends after applause for Achebe.
