About Artist to Artist Interviews

← Back

There has been so much hot air generated by the breathless hyperbole surrounding the Art Scene in Glasgow that I have begun to fear the whole city might just float away on a magic cotton wool cloud of miraculous mythologizing. Let’s lasso this blimp and bring it back to earth.

This series of interviews with artists is an attempt to get back to the source, artist-to-artist, straight from the horses mouth. As simple as that. These interviews have been conducted over the past year and I will be continuing, adding more as we go along.  I’m an artist, not a curator or a TV producer, I don’t have an angle or an agenda, I’m not making a zeitgeist busting show or trying to squeeze artists into any pre-cast moulds. OK, I’m not objective, I know the artists, I’m an insider and have been involved in many of the events, exhibitions and situations discussed but that aside I have no axe to grind. In terms of the artists selected I simply made a big list of everyone I could think of and I am very, very slowly working my way into that list, catching those who are around/have time etc.  I want to know about the work. I wanted to hear the artists talking about their work. That holds great value. These interviews are long and unedited. There is no narrative imposition. The conversations stretch out into as much space as was required, what a luxury. In a way they can be seen as a portrait of each artist, we are both miked up but you only see the artist. In this way I hope it begins to articulate a more authentic voice where the focus can return to the work. This is the beginning.
